“MILLENNIUM ODYSSEY. ONE NAME: LITHUANIA” TO REUNITE LITHUANIAN COMMUNITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD
There is over one million of Lithuanians scattered around the world. Many of them have left Lithuania for Ireland, Spain and the UK over this decade. Having settled abroad, Lithuanians establish public organisations and Lithuanian communities determined to maintain close ties with Lithuania.
Currently, there are forty Lithuanian communities across the world. They are part of the Lithuanian World Community aiming at preservation of Lithuanian national identity and reinforcement of the diaspora’s links with Lithuania.
There are 191 Lithuanian education establishments (comprehensive education, Lithuanian schools and courses of the Lithuanian language) all over the world.
The Millennium Odyssey intends to visit 26 Lithuanian communities in 20 countries across five continents. The Lithuanian sailors have been handed in with letters by the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus to be passed on to the Lithuanian communities inviting them to hold a joint celebration of the millennium of Lithuania’s name on July 2009.
