This year Lithuania celebrates the 1000th anniversary of the first mentioning of the name of Lithuania. This is unique moment in time, for unique and historic nation.
On the 5th of October of 2008 a team of brave Lithuanian yachtsmen started Millennium Odyssey, sailing from Klaipeda, Lithuania around the world with a motto “One name – Lithuania.” The mission of Millennium Odyssey is to become a worldwide ambassador of Lithuania’s millenary celebration and better present Lithuania to American people and bring together Lithuanian communities around the world.
The President of Lithuania, H.E. Valdas Adamkus, has given his own flag to crew, to be flown throughout the journey around the globe. The Captains will also deliver a special message from Lithuanian President to American Lithuanian Community. The message invites Lithuanians to be proud of their home country and to celebrate millennium anniversary on the 6th of July.
Before reaching Miami Lithuanian Millennium Odyssey traveled more than 30000 nautical miles and four continents. The circumnavigation is being jointly undertaken by many Lithuanian yachtsmen, involving 11 crews that are changing over at different points along the way. After circling the globe the sailors will return to their native shores on the 6th of July, 2009, for worldwide celebration.
