One name: Lithuania. With this slogan the project The Millennium Odyssey started on October 5, 2008, when Lithuanian yachtsmen resolved to sail around the world and to make the name of Lithuania famous. The glorious mission of the participants of The Millennium Odyssey was to summon all Lithuanian communities all over the world and to celebrate simultaneously the millennium of the name of Lithuania in all five continents.
President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus handed in the flag of the President of Lithuania to the captains of The Millennium Odyssey so that it would be carried around the world. Also, the captains granted each visited Lithuanian community the Address of the President of Lithuania. The Address encouraged all Lithuanians to be proud of Lithuania and to celebrate the millennium of its name together.
All Lithuanian communities in all countries welcomed the yachtsmen in a very cordial and hospitable manner. During a nine months long voyage, the The Millennium Odyssey yacht visited 26 Lithuanian communities in 20 countries, across five continents.
The yacht Ambersail LTU 1000 set off on a voyage in Klaipėda and managed to cover 43,427 nautical miles over 200 days of sailing. 11 crews of yachtsmen sailed around the world and interchanged in various place of the earth. All in all, 120 Lithuanian yachtsmen participated in the Odyssey.
On July 5, 2009, having completed their mission and summoned all Lithuanians around the world to celebrate the millennium of Lithuania together, the yachtsmen returned to the port of Klaipėda. On that day, upon the invitation of The Millennium Odyssey, the national Lithuanian anthem joined all Lithuanians in the entire world into a live chain of voices for a few historic moments. That way we have loudly and proudly declared to the world that the name of Lithuania is celebrating its 1000th anniversary. We have become the first nation to ever sing the national anthem simultaneously all over the world. These memorable moments have been captured in 52 places of the planet as well as in Lithuania, and have also been recorded in a unique DVD film Tautiška giesmė – aplink pasaulį (National Song – Around the World).
The Millennium Odyssey has become one of the nicest civil initiatives of the 21st century. On July 5, 2009, 46 percent of the population of Lithuania sang the national anthem simultaneously. The data of the sociological survey Awareness of the Lithuanian Millennium Events has showed that the majority of the population of Lithuania (i.e. 54.5 percent) consider the voyage around the world of The Millennium Odyssey and the united singing of the national anthem to be the most important event rendering meaning to the commemoration of the millennium of Lithuania.
